Crime prevention in the hot weather

Hot weather can make us more relaxed—but unfortunately, that’s exactly when opportunistic crime tends to spike. Here’s how to stay safe while keeping cool:

🏠 Home Security

  • Keep windows and doors locked when you're not in the room or leaving the house—even briefly.

  • Use window restrictors to allow airflow without full access.

  • Lock away garden tools and equipment—they can be used to break in1.

  • Install motion-activated lights, CCTV, or smart doorbells to deter intruders1.

  • 🚗 Vehicle Safety

  • Don’t leave valuables visible inside your car.

  • Park in shaded, secure areas and lock up—even if you’re just popping into a shop.

  • 🧳 Holiday Precautions

  • Avoid posting holiday plans publicly on social media—you might be advertising an empty home3.

  • Use timers for lights or radios to make your home look occupied.

  • 🧒 Personal Safety

  • Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol when out in the sun.

  • Stick with friends on nights out and plan your journey home in advance.

  • Use trusted taxi services and avoid walking alone late at night.

  • 🐾 Pet & Wildlife Protection

  • Never leave pets in parked cars—even for a few minutes.

  • Provide shade and water for animals, and avoid walking dogs during peak heat.

  • If you’re in Rugeley or nearby, your local police team may also share seasonal tips via Staffordshire Smart Alert. Want help setting up alerts or checking your home’s security? Get in touch.
